40 Days of Dating

A new weird and wonderful form of reality dating for the tech-savvy, internet obsessed generation has arrived in the form of 40 Days of Dating. Its blog has gone viral, being updated daily with anecdotes of one couple’s contrived dating regime, which is basically a form of social experiment that is like marmite to its readers – they either love it or hate it.

Regardless, it’s exposing the inner working s of relationships for anyone on the web to follow - thoughts, feelings, reactions (and overreactions),  interpretations, not to mention emotions like  excitement, exhaustion, boredom and anxiety – all those people love to watch others feel the pressure of and respond to. Plus, the blog has some rather impressive Warhol-inspired comic art that accompanies each post, which sum up the day’s attitude to dating. A kind of respite for all those who are looking for love.

And it’s the daters’ attitude to dating that is captivating so many readers/followers. The premise is two best friends (boy and girl) end up single at the same time and try a social experiment where they ‘date’ exclusively for 40 days – including seeing each other every day and meeting with a couple’s therapist once a week. By the end they both hope to solve their relationship issues: he is a commitment phobe, she is a hopeless romantic.

Despite the obvious flaws in such a relationship, the fact remains that people find comfort and guidance in the different stages they go through – from initial dates to how the relationship  progresses (albeit in a whirlwind). They also provide interesting insight into things about human nature when it comes to dating and romance – something that can be reassuring, especially to those who are venturing out into the dating field for the first time in many years.

It is serving as a useful go-to place for people in relationships, looking to learn a lesson or two, and also those on the dating scene, looking for love. It shows, for real, two people’s reactions to a relationship. And this is often all the guidance someone is looking for when looking for love.
