Revamped Dating Rules

In the mid-nineties, 'The Rules' was first published – a dating guide that took the world by storm and completely polarised opinion on its techniques and tips for ‘how to bag a man’. Harking back to the way they did it in the 1950s, it infuriated feminists everywhere who called it sexist, outdated and degrading. Amongst its pearls of wisdom, advice such as not to talk to a man first and not to talk too much featured strongly. These anecdotes sat besides tips on how to keep a man on his toes, including don’t call him, make him jealous and act busy when he calls. Basically, how to play the game and win.

But its criticism was also around the fact dating, when right, shouldn’t be about game playing.

However, despite a backlash from women’s rights groups all over, The Rules still became one of the best selling dating guides of the decade, and now, it’s back.

Helping the cause are numerous endorsements by celebrity fans of ‘The Rules’, including Blake Lively and Beyonce.

A revamped version is once again bringing about heated discussion around its words of wisdom, which now references the digital age, and what rules apply to texting, Facebooking and emailing, among other forms of digital interaction. New chapters cover scenarios that can present themselves via digital communication but the premise is still the same – women should play hard to get to bag their Mr Right. Whether you believe in ‘The Rules’’ approach to dating or not, there are some of their ‘time-tested secrets’ that do have a place in today’s modern dating world. These include:

Be creative unlike any other: possess self confidence about yourself and ensure this radiates from you

Take care of yourself, take a bubble bath and keep telling yourself you are beautiful and that you are enough.

Observe his behaviours so you don’t end up with Mr Wrong – and don’t be afraid to tackle this.

If he does not call, he is not interested. Kind of speaks for itself.
