For those new to the online dating scene, researching the topic and finding out the current dating do’s/do not’s, seems to be the first step into the unknown. Working out ‘the norm’, how to write a profile, what pictures to upload, good words to use, things to avoid etc – all good tips for getting started, but it can be a minefield. Knowing where to start and what the basics are is all most people are looking for – not stories of terrible dates, embarrassing experiences and a long list of changes to make before you can venture online for a date.
A good place to start is your profile – but if this feels like the most difficult part (which for most people, it is) rope a friend in to help. This is a great way of working out what your most fabulous traits are, and how to write about them. It also makes it easier to sell yourself, without feeling conceited. Also, join some sites for a free trial, and have a look at other’s profiles to get an idea of tone, content etc, and build from there.
Writing your profile can also help you clarify what it is you are looking for in another person, and the important characteristics you are looking for in a match. This will make it easier to search and filter through anyone who also responds to your profile, lessening the chances of a disastrous encounter! But be optimistic about what you are looking for and don’t just resort to going for the same type you have in the past. By broadening your search criteria, you might just uncover the one date that was hiding beneath all the rest.
Finally, don’t give up if you haven’t found your ideal relationship within the first month. Be realistic and enjoy the experience…
